Crafts School at Slot Schaesberg: Merging Tradition with Modern Design
The crafts school at Slot Schaesberg integrates modern functionality with the historical character of medieval ruins. Using traditional craftsmanship and local materials, the design preserves the site’s cultural significance while envisioning its future use.
Design Approach & Concept
The design respects the medieval context while incorporating contemporary construction methods. The concept optimizes space with innovative structural and material strategies, starting with wood and concrete integration. The wooden framework, supported by a concrete base, is inspired by English shipbuilding techniques, especially in the roof design.
Structural & Material Strategy
The concrete foundation provides stability and durability, contrasting with the lighter wooden superstructure. Japanese joinery ensures structural integrity and aesthetic refinement. The adaptable foundation incorporates modular elements for future extensions, with diagonal wooden beams enhancing stability.
Roof & Spatial Organization
The roof structure, inspired by shipbuilding, uses layered materials for waterproofing and insulation. Internally, the design prioritizes natural light and openness. Mezzanine levels and transparent flooring improve illumination and spatial flow.
Context & Site Integration
Located in Heerlen, Netherlands, the site, surrounded by water and gardens, provides an ideal setting for the school. The design includes three zones: Library & Learning Spaces, Workshop & Production Areas, and Residential & Communal Spaces, ensuring efficient use of space and fostering collaboration.
Conclusion
The crafts school at Slot Schaesberg combines historical reverence with modern design, enhancing the site’s cultural identity while meeting functional needs. Through thoughtful material selection and spatial organization, the project creates a space where craftsmanship, education, and heritage merge.
